Some Sheffield Wednesday fans can’t help but believe that the club’s season is already over after it was announced that Steven Fletcher is expected to be out for some weeks.

It has now been confirmed that the former Wolves and Sunderland striker is out for about ten weeks after having sustained a knee injury. The 32-year-old had picked up the injury in the club’s recent surprise 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the third round of the FA Cup.

Sheffield Star journalist Dom Howson posted the update on Twitter and that sparked an angry reaction from Owls fans. They feel that the club’s season is now already over and they aren’t doing too well without the experienced forward.

The 32-year-old Scotsman had been in impressive form for the club before succumbing to injury this past weekend. He has been a regular for the club in front of goal, having made 23 appearances in all competitions for the club. He has racked up 12 goals so far, also picking up a couple of assists on the way. All these goals have come in the Championship.

This is already a better record than what he had last season too. He made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 times during this time for the club. He also picked up four assists on the way.

Fletcher had joined the club on a free transfer after his contract with Sunderland had expired. During his time at the Black Cats, he had played 108 times in all competitions. He scored 23 times, assisting eight times.

What do we think?

Fletcher’s injury leaves the Owls without a reliable goalscorer who can get goals on a consistent basis. He has 12, while the second-highest goalscorers have only three goals. They are Jordan Rhodes and Kadeem Harris. It shows how badly the club needs a new striker in the ongoing January transfer window or they will lose their promotion bid.
