Some Sheffield Wednesday fans have been left baffled by the fact that their defender Tom Lees has been nominated for December’s Player of the Month award.
The Owls had a rather mixed December this time around. They ended the month with losses to Cardiff and Stoke City. But it had started with a win over Brentford. They lost just two games, winning three and drawing their clash away to Derby County (Sky Sports).
The club’s Twitter account confirmed that Lees has been shortlisted for the Player of the Month award, but many fans aren’t too sure about it.
SWFC fans: Does Lees deserve the nomination?
He's done enough for that
He's not that good
They have expressed their surprise and feel that Lees doesn’t exactly deserve the nomination.

I mean, ye nice, he scored 2 goals, but they were both in games we lost, we conceded 6 in the 4 games he started in the league…

our Tom Lees? weird

Shouldn’t even be starting at Leeds assuming everyone fit.

Is this a joke?

Why? Because he scored two goals? His jobs to defend them, not score them. That’s an incredible nomination and I mean that with respect to Tom.

Wierd.

I find this truly astonishing, they have based this on the Bristol city game where he was solid, apart from that every games he’s played in since majority of goals have been his fault.

Lees is currently 29 and is a product of the Leeds United youth academy. He came Wednesday from the Yorkshire side back in the summer of 2014 for an undisclosed fee. During his time at Leeds, he had spent loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bury too.
This season, Lees has made 15 appearances in all competitions for the Owls. He has found the back of the net twice while playing at centre-back. Both of his goals have come in December as he racked up goals against Stoke and Cardiff in games that the club lost.
Last season, Lees was a regular in the club’s march towards a challenge for promotion. While they did fall short of the challenge, Lees played 46 times in all competitions for the club. He did score two goals and also got two assists.
What do we think?
Lees’ impact can’t be measured by goals, assists or clean sheets. He is a leader and adds a lot of experience to the club’s side. He may not have been the best player for the club this month, but he was hardly the worst too. And the fact that he scored twice in a mixed month adds some prestige to it too.
