Some Celtic fans have made it clear that they want Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle at Parkhead in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Hoops have been linked with a host of players for the January window, with Slovan Bratislava striker Andraz Sporar one of them. They have also drawn links with Cruzeiro defender Fabricio Bruno, with Jordan Rhodes also being linked with a move.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle has been linked with a move to the likes of Nottingham Forest and some other Championship clubs. But a debate recently broke out on Twitter about Celtic fans talking about Gayle.

Celtic Underground simply posted a link to the forward’s Wikipedia page, which led to a number of supporters leaving their own thoughts. The user later revealed they had a text about him but did not mention anything specific.

Some of the fans, however, made it clear that they would like the Englishman at Parkhead in January.

The 29-year-old Gayle was on loan at Championship side West Bromwich Albion last season and he impressed there. For the Baggies, he scored 23 times in just 39 Championship games and he helped them reach the play-off rounds for Premier League promotion.

But this season, Gayle has been out of favour at the St. James’ Park. He has featured only eight times in the Premier League, failing to score or assist even once so far. He has made only one start so far and that came in the club’s 4-1 loss to Manchester United.

Gayle is a former Crystal Palace player. During his time with the Eagles, he played 74 games in all competitions, racking up 25 goals and three assists.

What do we think?

Gayle, who is valued at £10.8 million (Transfermarkt), has been proving to be a very useful striker, as evident from his West Brom stint. As the Hoops, arguably, need a back-up for Odsonne Edouard, Gayle fits right into the picture. But his wages could be a burden. Keeping that in mind, maybe they should try to sign him on loan in January.
