Alasdair Gold has confirmed some of the targets Spurs are considering signing before Friday’s deadline, one of which includes Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke.

In an article for Football.London, Gold discusses the various striker options which Spurs have considered, saying ” Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke is another who has been looked at as a target man.” The North London club are running out of options to replace the injured Harry Kane ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline and it seems as if Benteke has emerged as a shock short-term option.

Alasdair Gold stated:

“Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke is another who has been looked at as a target man – Spurs had wanted to sign him from Aston Villa years ago – but his south London club have thus far been disinterested in loaning the Belgian out to anyone.”

The Belgian international has failed to score or provide an assist in 15 games for Palace this season, although 11 of those appearances have come from the bench. The 29-year-old has a poor average rating of 6.57 so it would not be a surprise to see Roy Hodgson try and move him on during this month’s transfer window.

TIF Tactics:

Benteke’s overall Premier League record is not the worst, with the target man having scored 70 goals in 216 appearances in the top division across spells with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Liverpool. Despite his recent form, the experienced striker is still a regular for his national side; with whom he has scored 15 goals in 37 caps, which suggests that he still has his goalscoring touch.

Despite his poor form this season, Benteke may not be the worst short-term option for Jose Mourinho’s side. He could use his strengths as a target man to bring in goal-scoring wingers such as Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and new signing Steven Bergwijn into play and with the 29-year-old currently valued at £11.7 million, he might well come cheap.
