Some Southampton fans have made it clear that they don’t want defender Maya Yoshida to leave the club in the ongoing January transfer window.

Fresh reports from Asist Analiz have recently reported that the Japanese defender is being eyed by Turkish club Trabzonspor in the ongoing January transfer window, as they are looking to add defenders to their side. Yoshida is one of the names that they are pursuing and he is in their shortlist of options.

Southampton fans: Can Yoshida leave this month?

A Saints-oriented page called Southampton Page relayed the news and this got many fans talking. They don’t want their ‘hero’ to leave the club this month.

The 31-year-old central defender has been at Southampton since they returned to the club in the summer of 2012. He had joined the club from Dutch side VVV Venlo, signing a three-year deal with the Saints.

This season, Yoshida has made 11 appearances in all competitions for the club, with eight of them coming in the Premier League. In total, the Japanese international has played a total of 768 minutes of first-team football for the club.

In the previous campaign, he had made 20 appearances in all competitions and had one assist to his name. Since joining the club, Yoshida has made a total of 194 appearances for the Saints and has scored nine times, racking up four assists.

What do we think?

Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens are currently the club’s first-choice central defenders. Jannik Vestergaard has been a back-up, with Yoshida also in the same role. If Southampton get an offer, they should only let Yoshida go if they have a replacement lined up. Or selling him could cost them, as the season wears on.
