Spurs fans were excited to hear that Mourinho is planning a revamp of their defence in upcoming transfer windows, with only Toby Alderweireld expected to survive his cull.
According to the Independent (via TranSPURS), the new Spurs boss wants to make significant changes to Spurs’ struggling defence, with only Alderweireld expected to keep his place. The North London club have kept just one clean sheet in the Premier League so far this season; the worst of any team, so it is no surprise that the Portuguese manager is keen to make changes.
Mourinho does not seem to be a big fan of Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez; a man who he reportedly told his Manchester United players to specifically target during the Europa League final against Ajax in 2017. The 23-year-old has been a regular in the Spurs side since joining in 2017 but could be set to lose his place should Mourinho bring in a new defensive line.
Should Sanchez keep his place under Mourinho?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to Mourinho’s plans can be seen in the tweets below.
Really hope this isn’t true – genuinely think Davinson Sanchez and Foyth have big futures ahead, hopefully with the club.

Desperately needs to be done. We have an incredible attack but defence this season has been woeful

I mean Sanchez is only 23 and can be good long term but agreed

Yesss. Have not been convinced of Sanchez; Toby has a good 2 seasons left and Jan is a solid backup.

Sanchez is rubbish

Good. Finally. With respect. They’ve been horrendous and it impacts everything. You can’t even go forward if you can’t hold the ball with confidence at the back.

It seems as if Spurs fans are split on Mourinho’s plans for their defence, especially when considering Sanchez, but many do recognise the need for change.
What do we think?
Spurs do look short at full-back as neither Danny Rose or Serge Aurier can be relied upon to produce consistent displays so it is no surprise that Mourinho wants to strengthen in those positions. Sanchez meanwhile, has had a mixed season so far, averaging a 6.79 rating and is still only young, but will seriously need to develop his technical side if he wants to maintain his spot in Spurs’ starting eleven.
