Spurs fans were shocked to hear that Jose Mourinho is hoping to turn Serge Aurier into one of the best right-backs in world football.
According to Foot Mercato (via Daily Hotspur), Mourinho has told Aurier that he can become one of the best in the world in his position. The Ivory Coast international joined Spurs from PSG in 2017 and has gone on to make 55 appearances in his two years at the club.
There was a lot of doubt surrounding Aurier’s performances under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, with notable disastrous displays against Southampton and Bayern Munich still fresh in Spurs fans’ minds. However, the 26-year-old has been nothing short of sensational under Jose Mourinho so far, which suggests that the Portuguese manager might not be that far off with his claim.
Can Serge Aurier become world-class under Mourinho?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to Mourinho’s Aurier comments can be seen in the tweets below.

I’d never have believed it, but he’s been one of our most improved players since Jose came in ? hasn’t done anything silly and has contributed upfield with goals and assists

José just doing one thing for now for sure just building team’s morale. That’s what team was lacking from 1 2 years maybe. Proper man management

These Spurs fans are clearly hopeful that Aurier can go on to become one of the world’s best but remain doubtful about the 26-year-old’s consistency.
What do we think?
There is no doubting that Aurier has been one of Spurs’ best players so far under Mourinho, but the key for him is staying consistent and ensuring that he starts to cut out some of the rash decisions he has become renowned for during his time at the North London club.
