Bruno Fernandes has been a man in the transfer spotlight for Spurs for some time now, but it seems as if Jose Mourinho has ended any interest in the Sporting Lisbon man.
The 25-year-old has been regularly linked with both Spurs and Manchester United in recent transfer windows but in a recent interview with Sky Sports (via Ricky Sacks), Mourinho said: “We are not a club that’s going to make big transfers, nor one that will focus on bringing in experienced players. Bruno Fernandes is a player of a level and value that doesn’t work for us.”
The Portuguese midfielder has been in sensational form so far this season averaging a 7.78 rating for club and country and it seemed as if a January move away was on the cards for Fernandes. However, a recent new contract with the Liga NOS side which increased his release clause to £85 million has dissuaded Mourinho from making a move for the creative midfielder.
Is Mourinho just playing mind games with Sporting Lisbon over Fernandes?
Yes

Ah mind games with Sporting. Love it.

So, when Eriksen leaves we will need to pay up for Lo Celso. It’s that or try and find a less expensive English AM like Grealish. Maddison probably costs too much now. I hope we sign Gio. He’s tougher than Eriksen and just as deadly in attack.

These Spurs fans are disappointed with the lack of ambition in bringing in Fernandes, however, some still feel that Mourinho may just be playing mind games with Sporting Lisbon.
What do we think?
It is understandable that Mourinho is no longer interested in Fernandes after his new contract, especially when considering the recent form of Dele Alli. However, there are so many mind games in transfers these days that if we do see Christian Eriksen leave in January or in the summer when his contract expires, then Mourinho may well reignite his interest in the Sporting Lisbon captain.
