Spurs fans were delighted to hear that centre-back Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract which will keep him at the North London club until 2023.
The news was announced on Spurs’ Twitter page on Friday morning, with the Belgian extending his deal for another three-and-a-half years. It comes as a relief to a lot of fans who were concerned that the 30-year-old defender might have left at the end of the season when his old contract was due to expire.
Alderweireld, who signed for Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015, has gone on to make 179 appearances for the North London club, having established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. The former Southampton man has instrumental in helping Jose Mourinho to turn Spurs’ form around; having started all seven of the Portuguese manager’s games in charge thus far.
Are you happy with Alderweireld's new deal?

These Spurs fans are clearly delighted that Alderweireld has signed a new contract at the club, with many accrediting Mourinho for his influence in the deal.
What do we think?
Alderweireld is a top-quality defender and it seems by the length of the deal that Mourinho is keen to build his defence around the Belgian defender. It is huge news for Spurs that he has committed his future to the club, as foreign clubs would have been able to approach the 30-year-old in January on a pre-contract deal should he not have signed a new deal.
