Spurs fans have been begging Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld to sign a new deal with the club after he put in another strong display in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Wolves.

Alderweireld, who signed for Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015, is yet to sign a new deal with the club and could leave Spurs on a free transfer at the end of the season when his current deal expires. The 30-year-old defender has made 179 appearances in his four years at the club and established himself as a top centre-back in the Premier League, but was touted to other clubs during the summer as Mauricio Pochettino looked to overhaul the squad.

However, no club was willing to meet the Belgian’s reported £25 million release clause and he was forced to stay at the North London club. The former Southampton man was seen as one of the players who failed to play to his potential under Pochettino at the start of the season, which contributed to the Argentinian’s unfortunate sacking, but he has been ever-present in Jose Mourinho’s side.

Spurs fans asking Alderweireld to sign a new deal can be seen in the replies to the Belgian’s tweet below.

These Spurs fans are clearly desperate for Alderweireld to sign a new deal at the club after he put in another strong performance against Wolves.

What do we think?

With January fast approaching, you would expect that Spurs will be keen to extend Alderweireld’s contract as other foreign clubs free to approach the 30-year-old on a pre-contract deal at the start of next year. It would certainly be a surprise if Mourinho didn’t want to offer him a new deal, as he has played the full 90 minutes in all of the Portuguese manager’s games so far, but the £31.5 million rated man may yet decide to leave on a free.
