Some Southampton fans are delighted about their club’s keen interest in signing Genk’s 22-year-old right-back Joakim Mæhle in the upcoming January transfer window.

Reports from Sky Sports are claiming that the Saints have reignited their interest in signing the defender, who was also their target in the previous January transfer window. But the last time they tried to sign him, Mæhle wasn’t interested in a potential move.

The report also claims that Saints’ boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is very keen on bolstering the right-back options the club has as they look to improve and avoid relegation this season.

Some Southampton fans are delighted about how the interest in the Dane has reignited.

Maehle is known to be one of the best right-backs in Belgium and has been consistent for the club over the last few seasons at the age of 22.

This season, he has played 24 times in all competitions for the club, playing regularly in the right-back position. He has one goal and has also racked up three assists so far. In the Belgian league, the Dane has played 16 times.

He made his debut for the club back in the 2017-18 campaign for Genk and has been a regular since. Before that, he was at Dutch club Aalborg, where he had played 27 times in all competitions as a teenager.

For Genk, he has played 105 games in all competitions. He has scored six times since then, assisting a total of 18 times as well.

What do we think?

The manner in which Cedric and Yan Valery have underperformed this season is a big reason for why the club is looking for a right-back. Both of them have failed to nail down a regular position in that part of the pitch, while Mæhle has been a regular for Genk at a tender age over the last three seasons. And he could be the solution to the Saints’ problems.
