Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to criticise midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for his poor display against Aston Villa in the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat.
This comes after Newcastle news Twitter account @NUFC360 shared a post slating Shelvey for his display in the defeat.
This post then led to a number of Newcastle fans sharing their own similar opinions on the midfielder.
Here’s a sample of Newcastle fans criticising Shelvey for his display against Villa:
Genuinely useless. Why isn’t M Longstaff playing? He gets stuck in and can pass. These guys only try 1 in 4.

Agreed. They’ve both been anonymous.

They 2 can’t play together

The 27-year-old, who is valued at £13.5 million (Transfermarkt), played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat at Villa Park, earning himself a match rating of 6.9, according to WhoScored. But it seems as though this was not enough for some Newcastle fans who have had enough of Shelvey’s sporadic contributions in recent games.
Jonjo is a passenger again big Andy on now

Shelvey can’t defend … Haydn permanently pulled out of place

Shelvey is lazy and ambles around meaning whoever plays with him has to cover twice as much grass and invariably ends up out of position and running around like a headless chicken. Tactics / formation wise the biggest issue was being over run too easily in midfield

What do we think?
Maybe the current formation of 5-4-1 implemented by Steve Bruce doesn’t suit Shelvey and his qualities. Or perhaps he just needs more confidence to perform well on the pitch. Either way, Bruce will need to work out what he needs to do to get the best out of his players, or else Newcastle could find themselves in an early relegation battle.
