Former Celtic man John Hartson has given his verdict about the comparisons involving Alfredo Morelos and Hoops striker Odsonne Edouard.

Hartson, who played for the Bhoys towards the end of his career, was talking to the Scottish Sun about the comparison and he stated that Edouard is more of a big game player than the Colombian.

The former Arsenal man said: “I don’t want to say who’s better, but Edouard is more proven. He’s done it on a more consistent basis.

“He’s scored in Old Firm games — you look at his goal at Ibrox when he popped up and cut inside to score a brilliant winner.

“For now, look at Edouard and he seems to have done it in the bigger games. But you look at Morelos and consistently he’s banging goals in for fun and you can’t deny him.

“They are both in good form. If you are Rangers you say Morelos, and if you are Celtic you say Edouard. He might not get the volume of goals that Morelos does, but he still gets the big goals. Morelos got 30 goals last season, which is a good return.”

Both strikers in high form

Edouard, who arrived at Celtic Park from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2018 permanently, has been a regular for the club up front this season. The 21-year-old has found the back of the net as many as eight times in the Premiership this season, racking up a tally of five assists on the way too.

In all competitions though, Odsonne has scored 12 times and assisted just many times in 24 appearances for the Hoops.

As far as Morelos goes, the Colombian has scored nine times in the Premiership for the Gers this season. In all competitions, the 23-year-old has scored as many as 22 times and also has a tally of seven assists.

Morelos had joined Rangers in the summer of 2017 for an undisclosed fee from HJK Helsinki. Since arriving, he has found the back of the net as many as 70 times in 117 appearances in all competitions.

TIF Tactics

It is very unfair to compare two strikers who play in two different systems and have different playing styles. What makes the comparison even more unfair is that one is 21 and another is 23 and both aren’t actually at the peak of their careers yet.

When it comes to Hartson’s comments, he does give due credit to both of them. He does applaud the fact that both score buckets of goals for their respective clubs. But he is also right when he says that Edouard is more of a big game player than Morelos already.

The former PSG youngster has already scored in the Old Firm derby this season – something Morelos is yet to do over the last two seasons.

Despite that, both are masters of their trade when it comes to the Scottish Premiership. It is better fans enjoy till they’re there instead of making comparisons.
