Lots of Spurs fans were complimentary of Juan Foyth’s display against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday night, with many labelling the Argentinian the ‘new’ first-choice right-back.
Foyth, who signed from Estudiantes in 2017, was entrusted with his first start in Serbia and played very well in a relatively unfamiliar right-back position; earning a 7.6 rating for his efforts. The 21-year-old is regularly deployed at full-back by Argentina but Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters are often preferred under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, with Walker-Peters left in England and Aurier off the pace in recent times, it was the Argentinian who was trusted to start this Champions League clash. Foyth demonstrated a great defensive understanding and connected well with his international compatriot Lo Celso on Spurs’ right-hand side.
Foyth has played just 28 times for Spurs in his two years with the club but with their current defensive woes, his promising performance last night may well lead to a run in the team for the youngster.
Some of the best reactions from Spurs fans to Foyth’s display can be seen in the tweets below.
Loved to see him and Lo Celso combine with nice passes and touches on the right wing as well. The future

He needs matches under his belt. No player can improve without consistent matches and minutes. Give this kid 10 in a row and watch him flourish.

Agree with all the above and am quite excited by Foyth. Always have been, the few times we’ve seen him. And the new midfield. A lot of promise! And we get our corners in!

You left out the nutmegs. He pulled a few of them tonight too. In all a very solid shift.

Another Argentine player that Poch is developing. Yet if we lose Poch, we will also possibly lose Foyth, and may notably, Lo Celso. Who wanted to play cor us under Poch. I highly doubt he will want to stay if Poch leaves.

Spurs fans were clearly happy with Foyth’s performance as they secured a rare clean sheet in Belgrade, with many hoping the 21-year-old retains his spot against Sheffield United on Saturday.
What do we think?
Foyth, who is valued at £13.5 million (Transfermarkt), had an excellent game against Red Star but playing in the Premier League will be a much bigger challenge for the Argentinian. You would hope that he would be given a chance against Sheffield United, considering the form of Aurier, but Spurs fans may have to wait a while until they see Foyth again.
