Spurs have been regularly linked with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes in recent transfer windows but it seems as if Jose Mourinho will make a formal approach for the midfielder in January.

According to the Athletic (via HotspurRelated), Jose Mourinho is very interested in signing the Sporting Lisbon captain in January, potentially as a long-term replacement for Christian Eriksen. Spurs were very close to signing Fernandes over the summer but were unable to negotiate a deal with the Portuguese giants.

Many Spurs fans are now hopeful that following the appointment of Mourinho last week, he will be able to tempt the free-scoring midfielder to North London in January.

Fernandes has started the season in superb fashion; averaging a 7.7 rating in all competitions, so it is no surprise that Mourinho wants to bring in the 25-year-old to help push Spurs back up the table.

Would Bruno Fernandes be a good signing for Spurs?

Reaction from Spurs fans to the latest efforts to sign Fernandes can be seen in the tweets below.

These Spurs fans would clearly welcome a move for the talented midfielder in January and will be hoping to see Mourinho negotiate a deal with Sporting Lisbon.

What do we think?

Fernandes would certainly add a lot of quality to the Spurs side but the 25-year-old is valued at £54 million (Transfermarkt) so it would be an expensive transfer for the club.

Spurs probably need to focus on improving their defence in January, after just one clean sheet in the league so far this season, so it would be a surprise to see Mourinho make a move for the attacking midfielder before possible improvements are made in positions of need.
