After it was announced on Wednesday morning that Jose Mourinho would take over as manager at Tottenham following Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking on Tuesday, the Portuguese coach’s remarks have certainly attracted the attention of a lot of Spurs fans.
When speaking to the BBC following his appointment, Mourinho said: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.” It has been a whirlwind 12 hours or so for Spurs fans but many will now want to get behind the 56-year-old, who was sacked by Manchester United in December last year.
Mourinho is one of the most successful managers of all time; winning the Premier League three times with Chelsea and the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan. Spurs fans will be hopeful therefore that Mourinho can be the man to end their trophyless run; with their last honour coming in the form of a League Cup win in 2008.
Reaction from Spurs fans to Mourinho’s quotes can be seen in the tweets below.

Haha he’s going to lose half of them off contract in 6 months time!! Time will tell I guess. If they start signing contracts then we know what the problem was. If they don’t, then we know it wasn’t Poch.

I don’t think he’ll have much choice but to bring through some of the youngsters as Levy is not exactly going to throw money at him. The results & performances have been dreadful this year & it need a change. Support the team whoever is manager#coys

Did he say Academy when has that ever excited him before ??? . January will be very interesting, if he does get the funds , Levy really has lost the plot . One thing for sure it’s gonna be a bumpy ride

Spurs fans are clearly less than convinced about the likelihood of Mourinho using academy players but it seems as if the majority of fans are backing him to do well.
What do we think?
Mourinho is used to being able to spend a lot of money as a manager so it will be interesting to see how he adapts at Spurs considering Daniel Levy’s renowned shrewdness when it comes to transfers.
Spurs have a great young squad, however, and if Mourinho is allowed to make a couple of changes in January, then it is hard to see a manager of his obvious ability not being able to push Spurs back up the table.
