Spurs fans have been delighted with Toby Alderweireld’s recent attitude following the appointment of Jose Mourinho, with many confident the defender will now sign a new contract with the club.

The 30-year-old was one of several players who looked set to leave in the summer when his contract expires, but following Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking and Mourinho’s appointment, it seems as if the Belgian defender’s attitude has changed completely. When speaking with Belgian news outlet HLN (via Kristoff Terreur) the former Southampton man said: “I am happy that I’m playing. I’m proud to work with a manager that has won it all. I am grateful that I can become a better player under him. I want to repay him for the faith he has shown in me.”

Alderweireld joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and has gone on to make 174 appearances for the North London club during his four years in England. Despite establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, Spurs tried and failed to sell the defender in the summer ahead of his contract expiry in the summer. However, his recent quotes seem to suggest that he is ready to sign a new deal at the club.

Does Alderweireld deserve a new deal after his actions under Pochettino?

These Spurs fans are clearly delighted with Alderweireld’s recent comments and will be hoping he puts pen to paper as soon as possible.

What do we think?

Alderweireld is clearly beginning to enjoy his football again under Mourinho and it would be a surprise to see him reject any contract the club may offer him. The defender was offered out for a reported £25 million in the summer and nobody opted to make the move, so it seems as if staying with Spurs and challenging for trophies under Mourinho is the Belgian international’s best option.
