Some Liverpool fans think Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is ‘obsessed’ with the Anfield-based side following the Spaniard’s comments about the UEFA Champions League.

Guardiola was recently talking about how City are far from being equal to the Reds in the Champions League, as they have reached just one semi-final in the competition while Liverpool have won it six times.

The Spaniard’s City side were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek, as Ilkay Gundogan’s goal didn’t prove enough for them to beat a familiar opposition once again.

But Guardiola’s comments have made many Liverpool fans laugh and they believe that he is obsessed with their club.

Guardiola joined City as the club’s manager in the summer of 2016. Since then, he has helped the club win two Premier League titles and the club also picked up an unprecedented domestic treble in England last season.

Despite that, European success has always eluded Guardiola at the Etihad. Last season, they were knocked out of the competition by rivals Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, as a late Raheem Sterling goal was disallowed by VAR.

In the 2016-17 season of the campaign, they went out at the hands of Monaco in the Round of 16 of the competition, losing on away goals. In the 2017-18 campaign, it was Liverpool themselves who had knocked Pep’s men out after inflicting defeats onto them in both legs of the quarter-final round.

Some Liverpool fans also believe that these comments are suggestive of the fact that Pep is cracking under pressure.

What do we think?

With City currently at third in the Premier League and Liverpool at the top, Guardiola would certainly be under immense pressure. The recent years show that they have had a rivalry going on and considering how close Liverpool came last season, Guardiola is desperate to prove that City aren’t as bad a team as the points table make them look.

The fact that City are nine points behind Liverpool is a tricky situation to be in. And the pressure is getting to Guardiola. It will get to anyone.
