Liverpool fans were relieved to hear that referee Michael Oliver will take charge of their game against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
He will be officiating arguably Liverpool’s biggest game of the season so far, as Jurgen Klopp’s side seek to go nine points clear at the top. Last year’s meeting at Anfield ended 0-0, with Riyad Mahrez missing a late penalty, while the meeting at the Etihad proved to be the Reds’ only loss of the year; with Manchester City triumphing 2-1.
Both sides have already come unstuck by harsh VAR calls this year, with Liverpool most recently denied a goal due to Roberto Firmino’s armpit being offside.
Indeed, after the recent controversy surround VAR, many Reds fans were rather happy with the referee appointment, as can be seen down below:

Liverpool fans are clearly relieved that they have got, in their opinion, the best referee in the league taking charge of their hugely important game against Manchester City on Sunday.
What do we think?
Oliver is a very competent referee and seems to avoid too much controversy and is yet to distribute a red card so far this season. Hopefully, fans see a match without controversy in Sunday’s game at Anfield as it promises to be one of the most exciting fixtures of the season.
Interestingly, the Reds are unbeaten in games that Michael Oliver has officiated in over the past couple of years, with their last loss coming against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium back in February of 2017, so you can understand why fans are rather pleased with the appointment.
