Everton defender, Matthew Pennington, has expressed a desire to cut his loan move to Hull City short, according to Football Insider.

The report, published on Tuesday, stated that the 25-year-old has grown frustrated in Yorkshire having played only 17 minutes in the championship this term (via Transfermarkt).

Despite also featuring in two Carabao Cup clashes for the Tigers, against Tranmere Rovers and Preston North End (via Transfermarkt), the Englishman wants to make a Goodison Park return.

Loan move frustration

Pennington is a player that is no stranger to a loan move away from the Toffees, with the 25-year-old having had loan spells with: Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City, Walsall, Leeds United, Ipswich Town and most recently, Hull City (per Transfermarkt).

With, arguably, the most successful of those coming with the Tractor Boys, where Pennington made 30 league appearances and scored once in the Championship last term – proving he can do it at Hull’s level.

However, despite being open to a permanent switch to the KCOM Stadium at the start of the move (via Hull Daily Mail), for one reason or another, things have turned sour.

TIF Tactics – Will he get game time under Marco Silva?

In reality, the short answer is – probably not.

Having only made nine appearances for the senior side in the blue half of Merseyside (via Transfermarkt), it is unlikely a failed loan move with the Tigers will persuade Silva to give the 25-year-old a chance.

Should Pennington return to Goodison Park in January it is most likely the defender will leave again on another loan move to finally fulfil his potential.

However, the man currently on loan at Hull may have one saving grace in that Silva only has three senior centre-back options at his disposal (per Whoscored).

Added to recent injury concerns around star defender – Yerry Mina – (per Liverpool Echo), Pennington may be kept around as central defender cover for the Toffees.
