Everton has reportedly stepped up their interest in signing a new goalkeeper with the impending departure of Maarten Stekelenburg, according to Football Insider

The 37-year-old that has been with the Toffees since 2016 after joining from Fulham in the summer of that year (as per BBC).

With the stopper’s contract due to expire in the summer of 2020 (via Daily Mail), the Toffees face the prospect of losing the Dutch veteran.

According to Football Insider, Marco Silva’s side has made a new goalkeeper their number one priority for the upcoming transfer windows.

However, with the Dutchman’s contract not up until the summer, it is unclear as to whether a new stopper will be signed in January or after Stekelenburg has left the club in June (per Football Insider).

While the club also has Jonas Lossl at their disposal, having signed on a three-year deal upon his contract expiring at Huddersfield Town over the summer (per the Premier League), Silva will want further backup for Jordan Pickford.

So, it’s not as if the Toffees are in desperate need of bringing in another goalkeeper, but it could be an option in order to put pressure on Lossl or even Pickford.

Of course, Stekelenburg wouldn’t exactly be a big miss should he leave the club as he’s only managed to appear 26 times for the Toffees, which includes just three appearances since the 2017/18 campaign.
