After seeing their side go down a goal against the run of play against Motherwell, Rangers fans were relieved to see the referee point to the spot after James Tavernier was taken down in the box. But the full-back’s luck quickly ran out as he smashed the penalty off the post.
This caused some fans to call for a new penalty kick taker over social media.

While some fans just wanted the captain to be taken off penalties, others had a new taker in mind already. A name that was brought up on more than one occasion was Jermain Defoe.

What do we think?
Getting Tavernier off penalties could be a great way to get the player back into a better headspace. However, it could also completely shoot the player’s confidence. So, the decision to take the player off penalties could be a big one, so it will be interesting to see what Steven Gerrard does. The manager did call upon fans to lay off the player and give him a bit of a break in his post-match interview, however, as he suggested that the player needs a little bit of help from the fans mentally (BBC).
