Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at Jake Hastie scoring on his debut for Rotherham United.

The 21-year-old winger made a flying start to life in League One when he struck for the Millers with a floated 37th minute free kick against Doncaster Rovers.

That goal wasn’t enough to ensure the win for his new side, who eventually lost 2-1, but the youngster did plenty to endear himself to supporters with a fine performance.

And many Rangers fans were just as eager to sing his praises.

Here are some of the best tweets.

Hastie’s goal was certainly unorthodox, and will join some illustrious company in the category of “goals from free kicks that probably weren’t actually intended to be a shot on target in the first place”.

But nonetheless, a goal is a goal, and there are few better times to score than on your first appearance for a new side.

Obviously, there will be some disappointment that his effort couldn’t have been more decisive with regards to the final result, but watching Rangers fans will care little about the Millers’ heartache.

Instead, they will have been thoroughly impressed by a display that showed passion, grit, and more than a little bit of quality from their loaned-out star.

Hastie’s potential has never been in doubt.

Eleven goals in all competitions last season were more than enough to illustrate what he was capable of, and it was no real surprising when some of the biggest clubs in Scotland started to circle.

But since he signed for Rangers over the summer, there has perhaps been some doubt over whether or not he actually had the necessary credentials needed to make a go of things at Ibrox.

His cause has hardly been helped by the arrival of players such as Sheyi Ojo, Brandon Barker, and Ryan Kent alongside him, but on the basis of his debut in England, he has more than enough maturity and moxie to turn it on when it matters.

One game will not define his season, or ensure he has a career with the Gers, but if this is a first step on his journey towards being a vital player for Steven Gerrard’s men, then he couldn’t have been much more sure-footed in making it.
