Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has taken to Twitter to hail Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar.

The Swiss ace was on target in his nation’s 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night, striding forward from the heart of defence to finish of an impressive piece of team interplay.

And Downie was quick to praise him for his contribution.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Unbelievable to think Schär cost Newcastle only £3m.

“That goal is a thing of beauty from a centre back.”

What does Schar offer Newcastle?

Just about everything.

The Swiss ace is not only one of the Magpies’ most reliable defensive presences, but he also offers a really decent goal threat too, as proven by his recent goal against Ireland.

Not only does he show the instinct and the initiative to get into the box, but the finish he applies at the end of a fine team move is both calm and classy.

If you’d seen Sergio Aguero tuck this one away you wouldn’t have batted an eyelid.

Schar’s star continues to rise and rise, and it’s easy to see why.

So far this season, he as averaged 3.3 tackles, 3.3 interceptions, and 3.5 clearances for the Toon Army, as per Whoscored, and he must one of the first names on Steve Bruce’s team sheet every week.

He is an absolute rock, and at 27, he is at the peak of his powers. Expect him to be right up there for player of the year on Tyneside.

The only concern is that he is playing so well, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him garnering more and more attention from some of the bigger sides in Europe.

According to Calcio Mercato, AC Milan were reportedly keen on him over the summer, with Paolo Maldini himself identifying him as a player to keep tabs on.

That is high praise indeed, and the longer that he continues to churn out these stellar displays, the more frequent this kind of report on his future will undoubtedly become.
