Fabian Schar scored a wonder goal for Switzerland last night in their Euro 2020 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, and Newcastle fans have reacted with awe on Twitter.

In a clip you can see below, Schar started off the move in the ROI half before Switzerland played five passes with the ball heading out to the right before coming back to Schar.

This time, he went straight down the middle and four passes later Schar found himself inside the penalty box where he calmly slotted the ball home.

It was a finish worthy of a striker – and a goal worthy of a win, but David McGoldrick scored his first international goal in the 85th minute to salvage a draw for the home side.

Last night was really about Schar though and Newcastle fans were suitably impressed on Twitter – here are the best reactions from delighted fans who are convinced they’ve got a real talent on their hands:

One fan said there was no better attacking centre-back than Schar in the world and challenged people to change his mind.

Schar started and finished the move last night, and it was brilliant, and he’s already got on the scoresheet for Newcastle this season, something big-money signing Miguel Almiron hasn’t managed for them since he joined in Janaury.

But best in the world? That’s a tough one. Looking at the Premier League, he’s neck and neck with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk during his time at Newcastle. Both scored four last season and both have one in the 19/20 campaign. Both players also registered one assist in 18/19. So, the jury’s out.

Another just said he was the best centre-back in the Premier League. We’re going to have to give that one to van Dijk, but one thing is certain, though, Schar is definitely one of the best attacking centre-backs in the world.

Newcastle paid just over £3m for Schar, from Deportiva La Coruna, and that is looking like a serious bargain now, as a few fans pointed out.

One said, “How long is it now before Northumbria Police open a fraud investigation into our ability to buy Fabian Schar for £3m”.
