West Brom will pick up a total of £10million for Jay Rodriguez thanks to his transfer clause but that is doing nothing to put suitors off chasing his capture this summer, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their live transfer blog (12/06, 17:37) that the Baggies’ forward will cost his prospective new club £5million upon his signing this summer and a further £5million in 12 months, courtesy of a transfer clause included in his contract as a result of their failure to secure promotion.

With the likes of Aston Villa, Leicester City and Sheffield United said to be keen, it is reported the eight-figure fee will not stop them chasing the Hawthorns ace, who netted 22 times in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign.

Opinion

Well, £10million is better than the £5million which was being reported – even if half of it will arrive in West Brom’s pocket a year from now. It is still a bargain fee for someone who has banged in the goals this season but then again his Premier League record is pretty average, with 33 strikes in 141 top flight appearances. At 29-years-old, it is not like he has plenty of years left to play top flight football and West Brom might be able to see the silver lining to his exit this summer. It appears as though they should have no difficulty in selling him, with plenty of suitors reported, but they will be gritting their teeth over the fact they are not able to ignite a bidding war for his services. Instead they will merely watch on as teams battle it out on a contractual basis rather than the transfer fee, with everyone who has £10million in their pocket – which is practically all the Premier League sides – able to trigger the clause in his contract.
