Rangers have moved into pole position to sign Oldham defender George Edmundson, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football outlet claim that the Light Blues have become favourites to secure the 21-year-old’s signature, despite the same website reporting that Peterborough United have had a £600,000 bid accepted on Monday.

Football Insider report that Edmundson still has his sights set on linking up with Steven Gerrard during the summer and has set his heart on making the move to Ibrox.

With only one year left on his current deal, Edmundson has handed in a transfer request in a bid to secure a move away from the club after the Gers have had numerous bids rejected for the defender.

OPINION

This must be taken as a come and get me plea from George Edmundson. The 21-year-old defender is clearly desperate to make the move to Ibrox and now Rangers will know what it takes to tempt Oldham’s hand. After Peterborough had a £600,000 bid accepted, all the Light Blues need to do now is match that offer and their long term target will finally be theirs. Steven Gerrard has already proven how much he wants the Oldham enforcer, with numerous bids sent and the former Liverpool man must now bite the bullet and deliver the asking price. If a League One club can tempt Oldham to sell then Rangers must be able to blow them out of the water and assert their dominance in the hunt for a new defender. Edmundson was a mainstay at Boundary Park this season and now has the chance to kick on his career and take a fresh start at Ibrox, something that clearly tickles his fancy.
