Tottenham have joined Manchester United in the hunt to sign Norwich enforcer Ben Godfrey, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Godfrey, 21, has blown away Spurs’ scouts this season with his superb performances for the Championship title-winners, and the London club’s talent spotters believe that he could star in Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield.

Godfrey is a centre-back by trade but has been used in the defensive midfield role by Daniel Farke at times and Spurs scouts have been impressed by the former York City ace’s displays in that area.

The Mail adds that Man United are also hot on the heels of the England Under-20 international after Rio Ferdinand recommended him to the Old Trafford giants.

Good move for Tottenham?

Spurs need strengthening in almost all parts of their squad in what promises to be a big summer this year, and adding Godfrey to their ranks will certainly be a clever move by Pochettino and his recruitment staff.

Godfrey was superb for Norwich last term, appearing 36 times across all competitions in both the defence and the midfield.

Tottenham could do with signing more homegrown talent and although the York-born ace is bound to cost a fair bit of cash, he has great potential and is likely to be a star in the next few years.

Likely to happen?

Man United are more than likely in pole position to sign Godfrey at this stage due to Ferdinand mentoring the 21-year-old and potentially having an influence over where he will head this summer.

However Spurs can guarantee more stability in the management, a more attractive style of play, better team-mates and of course, Champions League football.

It’s too soon to say for definite where Godfrey will head, but there’s a good chance that he won’t even consider leaving Carrow Road when staying put there for another year might be the best option for him.
