Southampton are not trying to sign Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claimed via their live transfer blog on Monday [04:26pm] that the Saints are not interested in adding another goalkeeper to their ranks this summer with Angus Gunn, Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster all still on the books at St Mary’s.

Corriere dello Sport reporter Alfredo Pedulla claimed via his personal website on Saturday that Southampton were close to completing an £8.9million deal to sign Dragowski after an impressive half-season loan at Empoli.

However that report has now been rubbished by Sky Sports.

OPINION

It is not a surprise to see this news being rubbished. Southampton do not need another goalkeeper and even if Forster does leave this summer, the Saints have other younger goalkeepers who can serve as a third-choice option behind Gunn and McCarthy. The only reason Ralph Hasenhuttl would need to add to that area of his squad was if he lost two of the aforementioned shot-stoppers. Dragowski is a decent young goalkeeper and if that happens then maybe a move could be on the cards, especially as the 6ft 3 [transfermarkt] colossus played well on loan at Empoli this season as they avoided relegation from Serie A. However the report from Italy might have just been an agent trying to drum up interest in his client or to try and get him to earn a more senior role at parent club Fiorentina for next season. After how well he played at Empoli, he certainly deserves that.
