Rangers are considering a £500,000 swoop for Royal Antwerp defender Daniel Opare in case James Tavernier exits, according to the Scottish Sun.

The national newspaper claim that the Gers are pondering making a six-figure move for the 28-year-old right-back as Tavernier may depart for the Premier League with Aston Villa and Brighton in the hunt for his services.

The Scottish Sun report that Opare has 12 months left on his Antwerp contract and as a result the Belgian club are keen to cash in on him now rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

Good move for Rangers?

If Tavernier is set to leave, than Opare isn’t the worst option to sign to replace him.

The 28-year-old flyer, who has 19 caps for Ghana, featured 24 times for Antwerp in his 2018/19 campaign and given his pacey nature, he could be a threat for the Gers on the flank.

The only question mark over him being capable of replacing Tavernier, is whether he can provide the same amount of goals the Gers captain does.

Tavernier scored 17 goals and assisted 20 in his 57 outings in his 2018/19 campaign, where as Opare didn’t register a goal or an assist for Antwerp in his latest campaign, so that isn’t exactly comforting.

Likely to happen?

There’s only a slim chance this report ends up turning into reality.

Rangers seem to only be considering a move for Opare in case Tavernier exits, and there’s no guarantee that the 27-year-old is about to pack his bags.

Tavernier is contracted to stay at Ibrox until 2022 and as the Gers’ captain; you feel Steven Gerrard will do everything he can to keep the player.

The Rangers right-back may have Aston Villa and Brighton in pursuit, but he does seem settled at Ibrox so maybe the allure of playing in the Premier League won’t prove to be too strong.
