Pundit Jackie McNamara believes that Rangers are struggling financially and might have to cash in on striker Alfredo Morelos this summer to raise funds for new additions.

Rangers could potentially be forced to withdraw from a move to sign Oldham Athletic’s George Edmundson, after having three bids for the defender turned down by the English club, according to the Scottish Sun.

McNamara, when asked about Rangers not being able to meet Oldham’s asking price for Edmundson, has suggested that the club could be experiencing some financial difficulties and believes that Steven Gerrard’s side might have to sell the likes of Morelos before they can recruit new players.

“That’s the money they’re talking about. Talking about competing and they won’t pay a million for him – it tells a story. I think there has been (financial difficulty) for a while now. Whether they have to sell Morelos or Tavernier to fund their team, it’ll be interesting to see,” McNamara told Football Insider.

“It looks like they’re talking of Morelos, linked with Newcastle and different clubs again. That’s what it looks like from the outside, they need to sell before they bring ones in.”

OPINION

McNamara might be right to suggest that Rangers could be set for a financially challenging summer transfer window. Gerrard will be wanting to improve his squad after failing to win a trophy in his first season in charge last campaign, but Rangers might have to as McNamara suggests sell off some key players before they can go into the transfer market. That would be a blow for the Scottish side, with Morelos a player likely to be sold if Rangers are experiencing financial issues, but as long as the money was invested wisely it could turn out to be the best move in the current situation. However, despite some concerns over Rangers’ finances the club did invest in the last two windows, brining in the likes of Jermaine Defoe, Steven Davis and Glen Kamara, which suggests there must be some money available but that Gerrard’s side might have already spent most of it.
