Lee Hodson is on the verge of leaving Rangers on a free transfer after receiving a contract offer from St Mirren, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football outlet went on to add that Hodson is very keen to join the club he spent last season at and is considering a long-term deal at the club.

The Northern Ireland, who has 24 caps for his country, international spent last season on-loan at the Gers’ fellow Scottish Premier League side, making 19 appearances in the process.

Steven Gerrard has already admitted to the 27-year-old that he will not receive a new deal at the Light Blues, and will be a free agent when his current contract expires.

Hodson never made much of an impact at Ibrox, only making 27 appearances in his three-year spell at the club.

OPINION

This would be a move that suits all parties and the quicker it can be concluded the better. Hodson will want to leave his Rangers’ career in the past after three disappointing seasons, whereas, Steven Gerrard will look to get his wages off the bill and use the money to potentially bring in a new full-back. Hodson was always going to play second string to the captain, James Tavernier. The English defender has been unreal for Rangers in the past couple of seasons and there was no chance Hodson was going to change that with his own disappointing form. At 27-years-old, the former Watford defender still has plenty of time left in his career and that is better spent at a club like St Mirren that can more than likely guarantee first-team football every single week. Hodson will have the chance to show Gerrard what he could miss next season, but it’s a massive doubt that the former Liverpool man will be shaking in his boots at the prospect. In the end, the quicker this deal is concluded, the brighter the future will look for both.
