Rangers have opened talks to sign Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that the 22-year-old is weighing up several offers that have been made to him as he approaches the end of his contract at The Valley, which expires on June 30.

It is understood that Aribo is set to reject the chance to sign a new deal with Charlton and become a free agent, which has led to a number of clubs being interested in signing him this summer after an impressive promotion-winning season in England’s League One.

Good move for Rangers?

Aribo is a good young player who excelled for Charlton this season in England’s third-tier.

The London-born ace made 39 appearances across all competitions for Lee Bowyer’s side, scoring 10 goals and supplying five assists in the process.

He is quite a versatile central midfielder who can also play on both wings and in a central attacking midfield role, so there is a good chance that he could fit in at Ibrox and be a good squad player for a year or so before reaching his potential and become a true star of the Scottish Premiership.

Steven Gerrard works well with young players and Aribo, for a free transfer, could be a very solid signing.

Likely to happen?

Rangers are unlikely to be on their own in talking to Aribo so there is a good chance they will face a lot of competition for his signature.

However the Gers have some very good selling points.

Gerrard is their manager, they can compete for top-flight silverware and will be playing in the Europa League next season.

Aribo should find that difficult to turn down.
