Tottenham slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday but reaching the tournament’s final stage was still worth celebrating.

Spurs signed no players in the last two transfers window and it was quite the achievement that they were able to reach the final.

In fact some Spurs fans probably still were ready to celebrate their season despite the disappointment on Saturday; however former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara has made sure to effectively pop any last party balloon that remains.

The 32-year-old claimed that Spurs were set to have a big issue as they weren’t going to have the transfer funds to give Mauricio Pochettino the backing he needs.

O’Hara claimed Spurs’ squad needed strengthening and while the board would love to let Pochettino spend lots of money on new players, he personally felt the club doesn’t have the funds to give to him.

“Listen I think the biggest issue Tottenham are going to have, is backing the manager in terms of money,” said O’Hara on talkSPORT (9:21am, Sunday June 2nd).

“He is going to want to spend y’know if he looked at Liverpool last night, the two best players on the pitch were Van Dijk and Alisson, and £140million they spent in the summer, Tottenham have to go and do that if they want to keep a manager of Pochettino’s stature, they’re going to have to spend.

“That’s where my issue is, I don’t think they’ve got the money to give him, even though they’d love to, I don’t think they have the conditions to spend money.

“I don’t think they’ll lose too many players, I know there is talk of Eriksen to Real Madrid, but I’m not sure, I don’t think they’ll lose many but they definitely need to get stronger.”

O’Hara is just going to make many Tottenham fans miserable with his claim about the club’s potential spend on transfers in the coming summer, as he is all doom and gloom.

Spurs need to invest in their playing squad as the display against Liverpool showed there was plenty of room for improvement, however signing top-quality players cost money.

Just like O’Hara pointed out Liverpool had to spend £75million on signing Virgil Van Dijk (Source: BBC Sport) and had to spend £67million on Alisson (Source: Sky Sports) in order to transform their side, and those figures are now standard in the transfer market.

While it sounds bad enough that Spurs won’t have the cash to go wild in the transfer market like they need to, O’Hara’s remarks make it sound like they will lose Pochettino as a result.

The Spurs manager not getting the funds could prompt him to leave the club as while he clearly has more work to do at the London side, it’s unclear how long he will be able to put up with not being able to compete financially with the club’s Premier League rivals.

So with that in mind, O’Hara has effectively stomped on any positive feelings that Spurs fans may have had left after reaching the Champions League final.
