BBC Sport journalist Phil McNulty has said that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino “deserves massive kudos” helping the club reach the Champions League final.

The North London club were beaten 2-0 in the final by Liverpool after getting past Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax in the knockout stages, beating the latter two teams in remarkable fashion.

The BBC Sport’s chief football writer added that Liverpool were the more clinical of the two sides on Saturday night.

“Spurs made Alisson work harder than Hugo Lloris had to, but they were not as clinical as Origi was with his single opportunity, the chance that put the game beyond them,” the journalist wrote in his BBC Sport column.

“Pochettino deserves massive kudos for taking Spurs to their first Champions League final but this is a body of work that must now be sustained by backing in the transfer market, an arena to which the Argentine has been a stranger for so long.”

OPINION

McNulty is exactly right, there is only so far Pochettino will be able to take this team without signing any players. Admittedly, the Argentine has not been active in the transfer market of late and Spurs have turned out alright, reaching their first ever Champions League final. But this team needs new additions. That was clear from Saturday’s game. Harry Kane was not at his best, and neither was Lucas Moura. Behind that, they have Fernando Llorente, who is set to leave this summer. To get to the next level, Spurs need some key additions that will help them do that, but adding players can only happen if you have the financial backing of the club. There is no doubt that if Pochettino does stay, he will be given the license to go out and spend money, but he must do it wisely and must spend the funds on the right players. If he does that, the North London club will definitely progress.
