With all the speculation surrounding Christian Eriksen at Tottenham, the past week has been a controversial one, to say the least.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the Danish international had admitted in an interview with Ekstrabladet that he was prepared to make the next step in his career amidst reports linking him to Real Madrid.

Although many Spurs fans might see this as negative news, this could work out in Mauricio Pochettino’s favour as he looks to build for next season.

That’s because Toby Alderweireld’s current contract situation seems to be going under-the-radar with everyone focusing on the potential of Eriksen becoming available in the summer.

Journalist Alasdair Gold reported on Football London that when Pochettino triggered a one-year extension in the Belgian’s contract, it automatically set up a £25million release clause for the Spurs enforcer.

Alderweireld has been outstanding since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015, making a total of 159 appearances, scoring six goals from defence.

Forming a great partner with fellow Belgian international, Jan Vertonghen, has been pivotal to Spurs’ success in recent years and the pair were at the heart of the clubs run to their first ever Champions League final.

The news of Eriksen is definitely a sickening thought for the Spurs fans but if they could get rid of the Dane, who is unhappy at the club, and keep the influential Alderweireld then they would definitely take it.

They need to take whatever silver linings they can get and with all eyes on Eriksen, the Belgian could be something of a forgotten figure.
