Aston Villa’s bid to sign Jota from Birmingham City is still on, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

An earlier report from the Birmingham Mail indicated that a deal to bring the 27-year-old to Villa Park was all but done, as Dean Smith’s side look to add to their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Monday, Nixon suggested that the deal has not been completed just yet because the Blues forward had to return to Spain.

However it is understood that he is now back in the UK and the deal is expected to go ahead.

OPINION

If Nixon’s latest assessment of this transfer rumour is true, Villa could have their man by the end of the week. It seems as if Jota was at the club last week for initial talks with Smith’s side, before going to Spain. Now that the player is back in England, it looks as if talks between the two will continue and a deal will be thrashed out in the coming days. It would be a good move for Villa, even if Jota is only considered as backup. Jota made 40 appearances in the Championship last term and only managed to score three times, but it his work away from putting the ball in the back of the net that impressed last term. The Spaniard set up nine goals for teammates which is a great statistic which proves how he could have a good effect on this Villa team. There is no doubt that Smith’s side will need reinforcements if they are to make a decent stab of their first season back in the Premier League, and Jota would be a good addition.
