Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot could be on his way out of the club this summer, according to the Chronicle.

The 6’2″ colossus [Transfermarkt] has not made a first team appearance since December 2017, and fell to fourth in the pecking order at St. James Park last season.

It is understood that he was also forced to train with the Magpies’ U23 side at the end of the campaign, and that the club have been scouting replacements on the continent.

OPINION

This is hardly a surprise really. No team really needs four senior goalkeepers, and given his age and status at the club, it’s hardly a surprise that Elliot would be the one ushered to the exit. He has been a fine servant for Newcastle down the years, but everything has to come to an end, and this feels like the most opportune moment for him to bow out of the club. There is, of course, still the possibility that he could stay on, especially if Rafa Benitez fails to agree a new contract, but given the choice between keeping the boss or keeping the fourth choice goalkeeper, it’s safe to assume what the Toon Army would rather see. Martin Dubravka has been a revelation on Tyneside, but you would hope, perhaps, that young Freddie Woodman is given his chance to shine at some point in the coming season as well.
