The Bin Zayed Group are making an error with their intentions to let Rafa Benitez go if they take over the club, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

According to the Mirror, the Dubai-based consortium are looking to replace the Spaniard, with Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho said to be high on their list of potential candidates.

But Douglas has claimed that ousting Benitez would be a mistake.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “If any new owners don’t want Rafa, that’s one huge error they’ve made from the outset.

“And why the message has to be caution. Those saying and writing it will be ‘best thing to ever happen to Newcastle need to realise we really know nothing of substance about BZG intentions.”

OPINION

Douglas is absolutely right here. You can link all the big names in the world to St. James’ Park, but the fact of the matter is that Benitez is the man for Newcastle. He is universally adored, and has worked wonders on a shoestring budget. If this real goes through, and that is a big if at the moment, what sort of message does it send out to the fanbase? Benitez is a world class manager who has endured a torrid spell at a poorly ran club. He could have left for bigger and better projects, but he has stayed the course. If anybody deserves a shot at turning the Magpies into a top, top team it is him. The worry will be that by coming in and immediately getting rid of the most popular manager United have had in years, the BZG will instantly alienate the fanbase. This could be Mike Ashley mark two if they’re not careful.
