Phil Jagielka to leave Everton

|

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has confirmed via Instagram that he will leave the club at the end of the month.

The 40-time England international – who has been at the Blues since arriving from Sheffield United in 2007 – is in the final year of his contract at Goodison Park.

Jagielka made 385 appearances for the club in his 11-year spell on Merseyside.

“It’s been hard to confirm my situation for next season as that decision hadn’t been fully made by the club until now,” he said via his personal Instagram account.

“Unfortunately my journey at Everton has come to an end after 12 fantastic seasons.”

OPINION

Well, what can you say about Phil Jagielka. Although it wasn’t the best of seasons for him to bow out from the club in terms of his on-field contributions – having made only seven Premier League appearances – this does not make him any less of an Everton legend. He will go down in the club’s folklore for a wonderful career with the Blues in which he has been an ever-present. The last two seasons or so have been quite hectic for Everton, what with Ronald Koeman being sacked and Sam Allardyce coming in, but things look to be getting back to a stable position with Marco Silva, and all through it, Jagielka has been one of the constants and has been a fantastic servant for the club. He will be remembered well and there is no doubt that he was not only a great player for Everton, but a great player for the Premier League in general, having been around for so long.
