Aston Villa are in the hunt to sign defender Todd Kane on a free transfer this summer, according to Football Insider.

The reliable news outlet claims that the 25-year-old is heading towards an exit from Stamford Bridge this summer after Chelsea missed the deadline to trigger an extension in his soon-to-expire contract.

Kane has spent the last season on loan at Hull City and it is understood that Villa are interested in the former England youth international due to his ability to play at both full-back positions and on either wing.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Do Aston Villa know that they have been promoted? Because Kane is the kind of player that you would expect mid-table Championship clubs to try and sign, not sides that are in the Premier League.

Kane struggled at Hull last season.

Even though he made 41 appearances in all competitions and scored a surprise brace against West Brom, his overall displays were not exactly something that would suggest he’d be a good addition for a top-flight club this summer.

Yes he’s available for free and yes he is extremely versatile, but Villa do not need to sign players to add some depth to their squad – they need to sign players who will walk into the starting line-up.

Likely to happen?

As Kane is going to be available for free once his Chelsea contract expires on June 30, it would not be a shock to see Aston Villa sign him.

The 25-year-old, who never made a single first team appearances for the Blues and had eight loan spells away from Stamford Bridge, would surely jump at the chance to join the Villans, so even though it would be a pointless signing, it is one that could happen.
