OPINION
Everton are a big club. Historically, nobody can really argue with that fact, wirer the Toffees boasting the kind of bulging trophy cabinet most other clubs would kill for. In recent times, however, they have struggled to live up to their billing, and no trophy since 1995 tells you just how bad things are at Goodison Park. Ask any fan, however, and they will tell you that the club is still a major player in the English game, albeit something of a sleeping giant. Clearly, however, Memphis Depay doesn’t think so. The Dutch forward was linked with a move to the Blues earlier in the week, as reported by journalist Robin Bairner, but is apparently uninterested in a switch on the basis of the fact that the club isn’t prestigious enough for him. That’s a blow for Everton, but by the sound of it, they could well have dodged a bullet on this one. For one thing, Depay didn’t exactly sparkle during his first spell in England, and it was no real surprise that Manchester United offloaded him. Yes he has come to the fore for Lyon since, but honestly, you wouldn’t be surprised if his form is a product of location rather than talent. What’s more, if this is how he feels about the club, would you want him there in the first place? Probably not. This one is best avoided.
