Earning promotion back to the Premier League after a three-year absence was the easy part for Aston Villa and Dean Smith. Their summer business would definitely be the hard part with many signings needed to make them competitive. Add on top of that, the need to clear out many pieces of dead wood left at the club from their previous failings and everyone involved at Villa could be in for a long summer. One of the first things needed was to turn an aging squad into one full of athleticism that could handle the demands of a Premier League that seems to demand more every single season. The release of older players such as Glenn Whelan and Alan Hutton were certainly great moves by the club. Then came the comical situation surrounding Ross McCormack, who despite not playing for the club since 2017, earned himself a considerable pay rise after their promotion. It was confirmed on Monday that the Scotsman had reached an agreement with the club to part ways and the Villa fans reacted with great joy to the news on Twitter. One fan said: “Can we get a parade to celebrate getting rid of Ross McCormack?” while another just simply wrote: “Party time”. It seems that they are pretty happy at seeing the back of the forward and after draining their resources without giving anything back, you can understand why.

This is Futbol has picked out some of the supporters’ delighted tweets:
