BBC journalist Adam Pope has claimed that Kalvin Phillips wants to stay at Leeds after a Telegraph report linked him with a £14m bid from Aston Villa.

Pope was asked about Phillip’s contact situation by a Leeds fan on Twitter and the BBC man responded, saying that he had two years left on his current deal.

But it was his next comment that will provide immense relief to Leeds fans: “I understand he wants to stay especially with Bielsa remaining”.

Pope made the claim on Thursday morning on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Marcelo Bielsa wants Phillips to stay, according to YEP journalist Phil Hay, and now it appears that Phillips wants to stay. However, it’s very likely that if it’s not Phillips, then another player or players will be sold this summer. Leeds are losing money and owner Andrea Radrizzani has already admitted that this summer will be tough as he bids to get his side back in the Premier League again. Leeds have shown that they’re not scared to sell to re-invest after shipping Ronaldo Vieira out last summer. Phillips would be a more high-profile move if he was to depart. He’s Leeds’ most valuable player on the pitch and off it – Leeds have said they want at least £20million for him. That means Aston Villa are still a way off if they make a £14million bid but we imagine that very high level talks will be going on at Leeds at the moment that could have big ramifications for the summer and for next season.
