Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has claimed that Celtic have made an approach for 18-year-old Bolton midfielder Luca Connell.

This comes after a Daily Mail report that said the Hoops were leading the race to sign the in-demand youngster.

The report claims he could be available for as little as a £240k compensation fee, with Connell out of contract in the summer.

Good move for Celtic?

This would be a great move for Celtic, with a number of clubs including Rangers also interested in signing him. It’s tough on Bolton who are cash-strapped and in crisis after relegation from the Championship. However, with Connell out of contract in the summer there’s not a lot they can do about it. £240k would represent a real bargain for a player who broke into the first-team last season, making 10 Championship appearances.

Likely to happen?

Bolton might prefer to place him elsewhere in the hope of getting a fee for the youngster, but Celtic must be a real pull for Connell. The Scottish Champions are set to rebuild this summer under new manager Neil Lennon and there are no bigger stages that will be able to offer Connell first-team football next season. This would be a string in the bow for Lennon if he can pull it off.
