Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills has rubbished Everton’s reported plan to get Danny Rose, plus cash, from Tottenham in exchange for Lucas Digne.

According to the Daily Star, the Toffees have proposed the player-plus-cash deal to the North London club with Mauricio Pochettino a fan of the Goodison Park left-back.

Digne, 25, was superb for Everton in his debut season in England, and that is why Mills believes that the Blues would be getting the short end of the stick if they went ahead with what they have mooted to Spurs.

“That wouldn’t be a good deal, Everton must pull the plug if they’re thinking of that,” Mills told Football Insider. “What benefit would Everton get from that?

“Danny Rose is a fine player but he’s nearly 30 (he turns 29 next month) and Everton are looking for younger players who have the potential to improve.

“Lucas Digne is worth £40million now. Even if Everton get some cash as well as Rose, I don’t see the deal as a positive swap for them. Digne is a fabulous player who they need to keep.”

OPINION

Mills has made a very good point here. Everton know that Digne can play well for them and he is several years younger than Rose, so why risk signing the England international when they have the former Barcelona left-back in their squad? Spurs fans love Rose because he had a great season in North London and Evertonians love Digne after his stellar debut campaign in England. It’s a no-brainer for both clubs just to keep hold of what they have got. Everton don’t need to worry about their left-back options this summer. They have Digne and Leighton Baines looks as though he will be penning a new deal at Goodison Park. Marco Silva and Marcel Brands have enough to worry about in other areas of the squad to create a new issue by planning an overhaul at left-back. Everton need a clinical striker, reinforcements at centre-back, a right winger and of course, Andre Gomes.
