Celtic have surely been handed a golden chance to sign Liam Kelly this summer after it was confirmed that he has left Livingston.

Livi announced via their official website on Tuesday that the 23-year-old goalkeeper has quit Almondvale after triggering a release clause in his contract.

Kelly proved himself to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Scottish Premiership last season as he kept an impressive 17 clean sheets in 42 appearances across all competitions for the side that only won promotion the year before.

With him in between the sticks, Livingston conceded less goals in the league than any other club in the bottom-half of the table. In fact, only Celtic, Rangers, Kilmarnock and Hibernian had a better defensive record over the course of the season than Livi.

So it is no surprise to see that the Hoops have already been linked with a move for the ex-Gers shot-stopper this summer.

The Scottish Sun reported in May that Celtic and Hamburg were interested in signing the former Scotland Under-21 international in this transfer window.

It was understood that Kelly would be available for just £50,000, but now that he has released himself from his contract at Livingston, he is available for free and the door is surely open for Celtic to make their move.

Dorus De Vries’ contract expires at the end of June and is widely expected to leave and it remains to be seen what happens with Craig Gordon’s future at Parkhead.

If Celtic have Scott Bain and Kelly as their two goalkeepers next season then Neil Lennon would be a very capable duo in that position as the Bhoys aim to win their ninth league title in a row, and potential a fourth domestic treble.
