Aston Villa have surely been given a boost in their pursuit of Rangers captain James Tavernier as the Gers are considering making a move for a potential replacement for him.

The Daily Mail previously reported that the Villans were among the clubs weighing up whether to make a bid for the 27-year-old right-back, but it was hard to know whether the defender could be torn away from Ibrox.

After all Tavernier is a key player in Steven Gerrard’s side as not only is he the club’s captain, he is a vital source of goals for them.

The 27-year-old flyer scored 17 goals and assisted 20 in 57 outings in his 2018/19 campaign and it’s hard to see them happily waving goodbye.

However it seems that there is at least a small chance that Rangers will bid farewell as they’re currently considering whether to swoop for Royal Antwerp defender Daniel Opare just in case Tavernier departs according to the Scottish Sun.

Surely if there’s no chance of the 27-year-old being poached this summer, the Gers wouldn’t be considering potential replacements for him.

So when you take that into account, that it makes seems like the Villans have a chance of succeeding in their pursuit of Tavernier, if they act quickly enough.

The Scottish Sun report states that Villa aren’t the only club in the race after all as fellow Premier League side Brighton have also put the defender on their shopping list.

While Dean Smith’s side may have to battle to get him, it does seem their pursuit of Tavernier is worthwhile as the fact the Scottish Sun are claiming the Gers are sounding out replacements, show they have a chance.
