Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes that Leeds United should “look seriously” into the signing of Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle.

The Magpies striker proved a star for West Brom while on loan at the Baggies in the Championship last season, netting 24 goals as the club reached the play-off semi-finals.

Writing in a column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton claimed that Gayle could be the man to add serious firepower to the Whites next term.

“Leeds are expected to rely mainly on the loan market, and loan signings from Premier League teams made the difference last year, not just at Aston Villa but at West Brom too,” he said.

“Look how many goals Dwight Gayle scored. If he is someone that is available I would look seriously into that.”

OPINION

It’s a very good suggestion from Prutton that would definitely benefit Leeds and Newcastle. Gayle was simply unplayable for the Baggies last season and his 24 goals were one of the main reasons why the Hawthorns club got so close to securing a return to the Premier League. In fact, if he had been available for the semi-final second leg against Aston Villa, you would not have bet against him firing the Baggies to Wembley. But now that he has returned to Newcastle, there is little chance of him staying at St James’ Park next term and there is no doubt he would love a return to the second tier, where he seems to thrive. What’s more, a new striker is exactly what Leeds need, with Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford not really hitting the heights required to fire Marcelo Bielsa’s men to the top flight. All in all, this is one that would work out for both clubs and Prutton is right: Leeds should look into it.
