Jan Vertonghen is a big doubt for Tottenham’s clash against Everton on Sunday, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claims that the 32-year-old defender is expected to miss Spurs’ final game of the Premier League season when they welcome Marco Silva’s side to North London this weekend.

It is understood that Vertonghen was pictured wearing a protective boot on his right foot after Spurs’ miraculous win against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

However the injury is not thought to be serious.

OPINION

Tottenham’s spot in the top-four of the Premier League is all but sealed and it would take a near miracle for Arsenal to catch up with Mauricio Pochettino’s side on the final day. It would take Spurs to lose to Everton, Arsenal to beat Burnley and an eight-goal swing in goal difference for Unai Emery’s men to sneak into the top four. Even without Vertonghen against the Toffees, Spurs are unlikely to be beaten, let alone hammered by the Merseyside club, so losing him for this weekend is not a major blow. As Spurs are into the Champions League final, Pochettino might opt to rest a lot of players anyway to avoid any injuries. It would be a very bad decision by Pochettino to start Vertonghen in that sense because if there is even the slightest of knock, he should be allowed to watch on from the stands or spend the afternoon at home recovering. The Belgian international has been a key player for Spurs this term by appearing in 33 matches across all competitions. However they should be able to cope without him against Everton.
